Synopsis: The X-Men band together to find a
mutant assassin who has made an attempt on the President's life, while
the Mutant Academy is attacked by military forces.
Review: As impossible as it seems for a sequel to be better than its
predecessor, X2 was. Now that they have established the X-Men world
they area able to play around in it. This movie doesn’t waste
time catching the viewer up, if you don’t already know something
about the X-Men or didn’t see the first film you’re behind.
In this film they are able to bring in some more characters with interesting
and flashy skills, I think their budget may have increased just a
bit. There were the usual exciting fight sequences and high-budget
special effects. A combination of good writing and good acting that
is unusual in a Hollywood blockbuster led to some funny moments in
this movie.
All of the old cast is back, plus a few new-comers, notably Alan
Cummings as Nightcrawler in what I would consider a mellow role
for him. Hugh Jackman will probably always look weird to me if he
hasn’t got wild hair and a grimace on his face, since Wolverine
was his first acting venture that reached the States I’m not
sure I’ll ever shake that image. So I guess it’s a good
thing he is good at the part. Famke
Janssen as Jean Grey whipped out her acting ability and really
stood out in this film. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos
gets to she her blue scales for one scene and actually look like
herself, I’m sure audiences everywhere appreciate it. Brian
Cox performs well as an ex-military bad-guy intent on killing all
of the mutants in the world.
I’m not sure what can be attributed for the improvement from
X-Men to X2, but hopefully the producers know and can make sure
that the next one (and there is sure to be a next one) continues
this trend. I would recommend seeing this movie, I would also recommend
waiting until the frenzy dies down and you won’t have to deal
with the crowds of people stampeding to see this movie.
